Let’s use up those forgotten gift cards!

Let’s use up those forgotten gift cards!

Morning!

So today is not National Use Your Gift Card Day, but I just learned that it’s a thing (celebrated January 18th this year), and rather than wait for that glorious day to come I thought we’d kick off the party early since EVERY DAY is a great day to cash in those forgotten gifts ?

And forgotten is an understatement as apparently we give up close to $1 BILLION of unused gift cards every single year!! One billion!! Of FREE money!

Now maybe that’s due to us losing them, or even more probable – not *liking* the ones we’ve gotten and forgetting about them on purpose – but in any case that’s a lot of cash to throw down the drain and I say today we make a dent in that $1,000,000,000. Let’s see if we can get it down to at least $999,999,000, shall we? ? I think we can collectively use up $1,000, right?

It’s as easy as 1) collecting them all up and then making it your mission to finally USE THEM!, or 2) picking out any of these other options below if it’s indeed a card you couldn’t care less about:

  • Using it to buy something for someone *else*
  • Re-gifting the card, so long as you don’t give it back to the original gifter! (very important)
  • Donating it to a local charity who will find a good us for it
  • Swapping them at any of those gift card swapper sites (CardpoolRaiseGiftCardGranny)
  • Selling them at any of those gift card swapper sites
  • Giving them away on your blog/social/anywhere else your friends gather together
  • Or lastly, being adventurous for once and just TRYING THEM OUT! ?

Or if you’re one who prefers to plan ahead with such things and not take on random challenges from money bloggers online, haha, here are some ways to at least help you REMEMBER to use them later so you don’t forget all over again:

  • Clip them/magnet them to your fridge!
  • Store them in your cell phone case/work lanyard/wallet you always carry with you
  • Stash them in your car console! (Yes, perhaps they could get stolen one day, but if you’ve already “lost” them what does it matter? Haha… That’s where I keep all mine anyways – that way whenever I show up to a place and then kick myself for not remembering the card, Past Me does me a solid by having it right there with me in the car! Which also works well for any *returns* I need to do too which I also used to be notorious for forgetting…)
  • And then finally, adding up calendar items to alert you to use them – along with the expiration date – also make for excellent reminders

Lots of ways to complete the mission, but just make sure you indeed complete it!! One billion dollars is a ton of money to waste, not to mention the kind gesture from your loved ones who thought of you in the first place… So if you don’t do it for you, do it at least for them dammit! ?

I’ll pass out another reminder come NUYGCD (National Use Your Gift Card Day), but in the meantime let’s see if we can hit our goal of using up $1,000 this week!! Let me know when you’ve completed it and I’ll tally it all up!

PS: I’m going to finally use our 5 year old movie theater gift card I keep forgetting about ? Frozen 2 here we come!!! Lol…

National Use Your Gift Card Day – Third Saturday in January

National Use Your Gift Card Day – Third Saturday in January 1024 512 admin

NATIONAL USE YOUR GIFT CARD DAY

National Use Your Gift Card Day reminds Americans to use the $1 billion in gift cards left unused each year. On the third Saturday in January, take stock of the gift cards you received over the holidays. Make the most of each one of them before they’re forgotten for good!

We all do it. Stash away gift cards thinking we will have more time later to use them. They collect dust and disappear into an abyss somewhere. We discover them as we clean and often don’t remember how much was on the card or if we used a portion of it. Those partial balances add up, too!  The first step is to collect the cards together and see what you have. You know where to look.

  • Every pocket of every purse and wallet you have
  • The infamous junk drawer
  • Glove compartment of the car
  • Bottom of the toy box (it may have been used to scrape goo off a toy)
  • The other junk drawer
  • A gift bag with the tissue paper still in it
  • The toolbox (we know what happens when a flathead screwdriver can’t be found)

Once you have your gift cards, get organized. Where do the gift cards work? Restaurants, retail, and services all offer gift cards. Some gift cards are designed to be used just about anywhere.

Maximizing Your Gift
  • Check for deals to maximize your gift cards. In most cases, gift cards work just like cash and can be used with coupons. There are exceptions, however, so it’s always good to check first.
  • Is the card to a place you don’t shop? You have a few options:
    • See if the card is good at a companion location
    • Check to see if the gift card can be cashed out
    • Have a gift card swap party or sell your gift card for cash
    • Donate your gift card to a charity fundraiser like a silent auction
  • Plan to overspend the amount of the gift card to avoid having small balances lying around. Even if you add a small useful item (lip balm is always handy) to go a penny over the amount, you’ll be able to hand the card over to the retailer to recycle the card.

HOW TO OBSERVE #UseYourGiftCardDay

Collect your gift cards. It’s time to use them. Don’t let them sit for a year and risk losing your gift altogether. Maximize your gift cards with deals and get the most out of your gift cards, too. Have a shopping spree or a spa day with your gift cards. Don’t let those gifts and savings pass you by! Use #UseYourGiftCardDay to share on social media.

National Use Your Gift Card Day™ to Take Place on January 18, 2020

National Use Your Gift Card Day™ to Take Place on January 18, 2020 1980 1320 admin

Gift Cards Get Their Own Day in America

Americans left $1 billion in gift cards unspent last year, just by forgetting about them in wallets, purses or desk drawers. It’s a problem with a solution. For the first time ever, gift cards are getting their own “remember to use” day on the national calendar – January 18, 2020. National Use Your Gift Card Day™ will take place the third Saturday in January every year following the holidays when gift cards are on the top of the wish list.

UseYourGiftCard.com is launching this holiday season and will be dedicated to helping consumers make the most of their gift cards with deals and offers – all in one place. Retail, restaurants and all gift card providers will have the opportunity to provide special promotions and incentives for redeeming gift cards on National Use Your Gift Card Day, which consumers will find at www.useyourgiftcard.com. Merchants will also be able to offer additional deals on the website throughout the year to re-engage with gift card recipients.

“Although gift cards are a favorite gift, the fact that so many go unused sparked the concept,” said Tracy Tilson, Founder of UseYourGiftCard.com.™ “National Use Your Gift Card Day was developed not just as a one-day reminder to use gift cards, but as a year-round online platform with expert tips on how to maximize them.”

According to a consumer sentiment survey released by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics, gift cards ranked as the second-most given gift (56 percent) for the holidays in 2018.

“We’re pleased to add National Use Your Gift Card Day to the 2020 edition of Chase’s Calendar of Events,” said Holly McGuire, Senior Editor. “This observance joins such days as Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday, and others.”

It’s simple to participate in National Use Your Gift Card Day:

  • Step 1 – Locate all unspent gift cards, even ones left with a small balance.
  • Step 2 – Check UseYourGiftCard.com to see which gift card providers are participating in National Use Your Gift Card Day to save money on purchases.
  • Step 3 – Make a shopping or dining plan to use them.
