UseYourGiftCard.com Encourages Consumers to Help Community During COVID-19 Crisis

BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 24, 2020) – UseYourGiftCard.com™ – an online platform dedicated to helping consumers make the most of their gift cards – is encouraging consumers to Use Your Gift for Good™ and help their communities during the current COVID-19 crisis.  By using unused gift cards, consumers can make an impact and support community-wide efforts on behalf of healthcare workers, first responders and those in need.

“As we watch the impacts of COVID-19 unfold in our communities, we can all agree that this is a critical time to help in any way possible,” said Tracy Tilson, founder of National Use Your Gift Card Day and the consumer platform www.UseYourGiftCard.com.  “That’s why we are encouraging consumers to gather unused gift cards and use them for good.”

Tilson offers these five tips to Use Your Gift Card for Good:

  • Support local restaurants by using gift cards to place delivery or carryout orders. Restaurants are also doing their part – Chipotle just launched a Healthcare Heroes Campaign, where it will be matching 10% of the special ‘Thank You’ egift card purchases and donating to Direct Relief. Learn more at Chipotle.com/healthcareheroes.

  • Donate unwanted gift cards to nonprofit organizations that can use them for purchasing meals and supplies.

  • Regift unused gift cards to people in the hard-hit industries like hospitality, who may need extra help during these tough times. For example, PetSmart gift cards can be donated to families that may be currently unemployed or to one of the thousands of new pet parents that have rescued pets over the last few weeks. Gift cards can be used to purchase items online for delivery or curbside pickup. For more information, visit PetSmart.com.

  • Say thanks to USPS, FedEx, UPS and Amazon Prime delivery drivers with a gift card for their continued efforts in delivering mail and important packages.

  • Purchase supplies with an unused gift card and donate the items to a nonprofit organization.

Banks Reported Blockbuster 2019 Profit with the Help of Consumers’ Credit Card Debt

A growing tide of consumer debt helped propel some of the country’s largest banks to major profits last year. JPMorgan Chase, the country’s largest bank, said it earned a record $36 billion profit last year with credit card loans increasing 8%. U.S. Bancorp said it brought in $7 billion last year with the help of a 7.6% increase in its credit card business. Citigroup, which reported a profit of $19 billion last year, said that its branded cards business increased 8% in North America last year. Even Wells Fargo, which has been struggling to rebound from scandals, reported that credit card loans were up $2 billion during the fourth quarter. [The Washington Post]

U.S. Banks, Card Companies Catch a Break in China Trade Deal

A trade deal with China has given U.S. banks and financial companies new hope that their decades long attempts to crack the Chinese market may bear fruit. The deal signed Wednesday clears some of the obstacles that have prevented U.S. banks, credit card networks, insurance companies and investors from doing business in China. [The Wall Street Journal]

Here’s the Average Credit Score by Generation

The average credit score was a record-breaking 703 in 2019, and that’s thanks in part to millennials who have achieved a 25-point increase since 2012. The2019 Experian Consumer Credit Review found that the average age Americans are reaching a FICO score of 700 is the lowest it’s ever been, at 54. The spike in millennials’ credit scores can be attributed to many entering the workforce, advancing in their careers and achieving life milestones, such as purchasing a home. [CNBC]

Visa Makes Another Move Beyond Credit Cards with $5.3 Billion Deal for Plaid

The largest player in credit cards is moving further beyond the traditional card-swiping model amid the rise of newer fintech options like Venmo and Betterment. Visa announced that it plans to acquire financial-technology upstart Plaid for $5.3 billion. Plaid, valued at about $2.65 billion in a late 2018 private funding round, allows individuals to connect their bank accounts with newer fintech platforms including Mint, Acorns, PayPal, Venmo and Betterment. The deal continues Visa’s M&A kick, following a busy 2019 in which the company bought a cross-border services company and a chargeback-reduction company. [MarketWatch]

The Economics of Unused Gift Cards

Most people who receive a gift card are quick to put it to use: More than 70% of all gift cards are redeemed within six months of purchase, according to one survey. But after that first 180 days, the rate of use tends to stagnate. At the one year mark, just under 80% of cards are redeemed, and as time passes, they are less and less likely to see the light of day. At any given time, 10% to 19% of gift card balances remain unredeemed, and around 6% of gift cards are never even used. [The Hustle]

6 Credit Card Predictions for 2020

2019 was an exciting year for consumers who are interested in credit cards, as there were plenty of major developments. Cards were relaunched with upgraded benefits and higher rewards rates. Several new cards were released, some by new entrants to the industry such as Apple. It looks like 2020 will be another year with plenty of credit card news. Based on the trends, here are a few predictions for the year. [The Motley Fool]

First-Ever ‘Use Your Gift Cards’ Holiday Coming Saturday

Welcome to America’s newest shopping holiday, and this one may be the most consumer-friendly of the bunch. This Saturday will mark the first-ever National Use Your Gift Card Day, a nudge to consumers to “Celebrate the Present” they may have received over the holidays rather than allowing their gift cards to potentially diminish in value and eventually expire. An estimated $1 billion in gift cards go unused each year. [Dayton Daily News]

Why Do 44% Of Millennials Bank With Bank Of America, Chase, And Wells Fargo? Mobile Banking

On average, four megabanks—Bank of America, Chase, Citi, and Wells Fargo—offer nearly 16 of the 18 value-added mobile banking features on their apps. Banks in the $50 billion to $1 trillion range average 10 features, and banks in the $10 billion to $50 billion range have, on average, just seven of the 18 features. Smaller banks are more likely to rely on vendors for their mobile banking platforms, which makes them dependent on their vendors’ technology roadmaps and development schedules. [Forbes]

Wells Fargo Ordered to Pay $102.8M in Mobile Deposit Patent Case

Wells Fargo is being ordered to pay $102.8 million in damages after a federal jury in Texas found the bank infringed on two United Services Automobile Association patents that allow customers to deposit checks using mobile devices. The case marks the second nine-figure judgment against the bank, and in favor of USAA, in the past two months. A separate jury in November said Wells Fargo should pay the military-focused insurer $200 million for infringing two other patents. [Banking Dive]

Consumers Prefer Chip Cards 5X More Than Magnetic Strip Cards

According to a new report, 54% of U.S. consumers choose inserting a chip card as their preferred payment method. This is significantly more than the 11% who prefer swiping a magnetic strip card. Contactless payments are increasing in popularity, though they have not taken off just yet. Only 7% of respondents said they preferred to tap their contactless cards, and 4% chose digital wallets for their payment of choice. The research found that 84% of businesses currently accept contactless payments, but 63% of consumers do not know they can tap-to-pay. [LowCards.com]

What Is the Capital One Purchase Eraser?

Capital One’s Purchase Eraser feature does exactly what its name suggests: It allows you to use your accumulated rewards (miles, in this case) to “erase,” or offset, eligible travel purchases that you make with your card. In effect, you get a statement credit for that specific travel expense, at a value of a penny per mile, as long as you make the redemption within 90 days of purchase. Several Capital One products offer this feature. [NerdWallet]

First-ever ‘Use Your Gift Cards’ holiday coming Saturday

First-ever ‘Use Your Gift Cards’ holiday coming Saturday 6000 4636 admin

Retailers, consumer groups say $1 billion goes unspent each year

Now that Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday are all in our collective rear-view mirrors, welcome to America’s newest shopping holiday — and this one may be the most consumer-friendly of the bunch.

This Saturday will mark the first-ever National Use Your Gift Card Day, a nudge to consumers to “Celebrate the Present” they may have received over the holidays rather than allowing their gift cards to potentially diminish in value and eventually expire. An estimated $1 billion in gift cards go unused each year

“Gift cards have never had their own day,” Tracy Tilson, founder of National Use Your Gift Card Day and of its web site, UseYourGiftCard.com. The founder of Tilson PR public-relations firm in south Florida registered the web site and trademarked the name after finding three expired gift cards stashed away in her wallet.

The National Retail Federation estimated that consumers planned to purchase three or four gift cards with an average credit of $47, for a total of $27.5 billion during the just-completed holiday season. Tilson said her UseYourGiftCard.com web site will help remind consumers to use their gift cards or to consider donating them before they end up in the bottom of drawers and the back of wallets.

“We all do it,” Tilson said in a release “We receive gift cards that were at the top of our wish lists for the holidays with every intention to use them, and then they’re forgotten. National Use Your Gift Card Day is a reminder for consumers to use their gift cards so not a single dollar goes unspent.”

UseYourGiftCard.com has been recognized by the 2020 edition of Chase’s Calendar of Events as well as the Registrar at National Day Calendar proclaiming National Use Your Gift Card Day to be observed on the third Saturday in January, annually.

The effort is partnering with merchants and restaurants to help remind their customers.

“They see it as potentially another shopping holiday,” Tilson said. Surveys show that consumers usually spend over and above the value of a gift card when they go shopping with card in hand. Plus, Tilson said, “It’s a great way to build brand loyalty.”

Some retailers are going a step further, creating special incentives around the new Use Your Gift Card holiday. “rue 21,” which has five locations throughout the Miami Valley, is offering 15 percent off purchases made with a gift card from Jan. 18-26. Fellow clothing retailer Life Is Good is offering 10 percent off of purchases made with a gift card.

John North, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Dayton and the Miami Valley, said the large amount of unused gift cards “is no surprise given that they are a popular gift for any occasion. Lost, misplaced and forgotten cards can add up quickly. Some consumers make an initial purchase and then forget and may even leave small amounts of dollars on the card. Those small amounts can add up as well.”

North said his office has received complaints related to gift cards being declined and then trouble getting a new gift card with the correct amount on it.

“Some gift cards have fees associated with them,” North said. “These fees could be monthly, or they could be related to each transaction. Many people do not read the fine print and are unaware of these fees. Some individuals allow their gift card to expire and when they go to use it they find it has been declined.”

And the BBB president’s advice for those who hold gift cards? “Spend the card immediately,” North said. “The most common reason a card goes unused is because it’s lost or misplaced.”

The self-described consumer warrior Clark Howard says the volatile retail landscape, with many retailers shutting down stores and perhaps flirting with bankruptcy, provides even more incentive to use gift cards quickly.

“There’s a real risk to you that a restaurant or retailer will go bust before you get a chance to use their gift card,” Howard wrote on his web site. “In that case, you’re out the money. … If you get a gift card for any occasion, you should treat it like a hot potato: Get it out of your wallet as soon as possible by using it.”

New National Use Your Gift Card Day born in Boca

New National Use Your Gift Card Day born in Boca 6000 4636 admin

Saturday Jan. 18 is the first official National Use Your Gift Card Day, a Boca businesswoman’s brainstorm.

It started when public relations guru Tracy Tilson was going through her wallet. She found several unused gift cards. “If I have them, so do a lot of other people,” she reasoned. That was her aha moment.

Tilson trademarked UseYourGiftCard.com and formed useyourgiftcard.com, a separate company. She worked with the Retail Gift Card Association and a consultant, and talked to merchants. “They loved it,” she said.

https://useyourgiftcard.com/ has deals and gift card tips from familiar brands like AMC Theatres, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Red Lobster and Panera Bread. BurgerFi is her agency’s client, Tilson said.

Consumers expected to buy three or four gift cards as presents, spending an average of $47 for $27.5 billion, the federation said. But $3 billion is destined to go unspent.

“Everyone can relate. This will always be the third Saturday in January, after the holidays,” she said about the National Day.

“You get yourself organized for the year. This just made sense,” she said about the gentle reminder.

In fact, this wasn’t Tilson’s first brainstorm. “I’m a serial entrepreneur,” she said. “I have 100 Go Daddy URLs saved.”

“National Use Your Gift Card Day" proclamation
Tracy Tilson holds the proclamation for “National Use Your Gift Card Day

Tracy Tilson knows she’s not the only one who has forgotten about gift cards she received over the holidays.

Then an idea sparked: How about a day that serves as a reminder to use them? And have retailers and restaurants offer deals. For the first time, Saturday, Jan. 18, will be known as “National Use Your Gift Card Day.”

You know, like, “National Doughnut Day” on the first Friday in June and “National Chess Day” the second Saturday in October. Many national trade organizations and media outlets have brought attention to Tilson’s movement.

Gift cards or old-fashioned certificates do not have an expiration date in New Hampshire, according to the Attorney General’s office.

Tilson, who runs Tilson Public Relations with offices in Florida and New Hampshire, worked to get the day officially designated through the National Day Calendar and Chase’s Calendar of Events.

“I was going through my wallet and found three or four unused gift cards I had forgotten about and kind of got this aha moment,” she said. “If I’m forgetting gift cards, I bet a lot of other people are too.”

Some cards are left in the bottom of drawers and the back of wallets and “time gets away,” Tilson said.

“We started to get momentum this fall,” Tilson said. “It just kind of grew and took off a little bit.”

The third Saturday in January seemed like a good day since most gift cards are given around Christmas. About $3 billion go unused every year, Tilson said. Consumers were projected to spend $27.5 billion on gift cards, according to the National Retail Federation.

Tilson founded a limited liability company to support the movement.

“With the new year, it is a good time to find your gift cards and get organized,” she said.

Some of the deals include:

Kohl’s: Use your gift card and earn $10 Kohl’s cash for every $50 spent.

LifeisGood.com: 10% off when you use a gift card.

Regal Cinemas: Receive one free refill with a purchase of a large soft drink and/or large popcorn on the same day of purchase when you use your gift card.

In 2018, Tilson opened a satellite office of her Boca Raton, Fla.-based public relations company in a 130-year old one-room schoolhouse in Hebron. Her family moved to the state when she was 5.

Tilson encouraged people to either use their cards or donate to an organization.

“We just want to remind people and that was the intention,” she said.
